Individual politician responses to the campaign ask

  • Alex Greenwich, New South Wales Parliament

Alex Greenwich, Independent Member for Sydney

Statement of support 10 March 2023

“Alex supports the campaign for better police responses to reports of sexual assault that protect victims and ensure they have access to legal representation and and advice. Alex and Karen will be meeting in April 2023 to discuss the proposal, the campaign and action that can be taken in New South Wales.”

  • Sue Higginson MLC, New South Wales Greens Spokesperson for Justice

Statement of support 20 March 2023

“This is an issue that is complex and systemic and will only change with the sustained, ongoing work of people like you and the campaign you are building. The Greens stand with you in calling for these reforms and are committed to ensuring legislative reforms that require police to better investigate cases of sexual violence in NSW and to ensure that the shockingly low number of perpetrators who ever see the inside of a courtroom becomes a thing of the past. We are also committed to ensuring that women and children are believed, supported and receive justice.

The Greens support all of the thoughtful reforms that are proposed. New requirements for police to carry out investigations to a minimum set of requirements is a strong approach to driving change. We also believe that there should be increased oversight with better resourcing of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) to ensure when people feel like their reported case hasn’t been investigated properly the LECC has capacity to investigate the concern and the police conduct. The threshold for LECC investigations is too high and the bulk of reports are handed over to the NSW Police to investigate themselves. This is an inadequate system that does not hold the integrity a complaints process should and means there is very little transparency, accountability or justice.

The Greens will work to introduce legislation that will address these much needed reforms, working with relevant portfolio holders and negotiating with the next government.

The Greens are very supportive of a cross-jurisdictional working group chaired by Karen Iles to ensure that broad reforms are coordinated and standardised nationwide.”
